Tutorial / Work smarter

Suppose you could…

Find your way around Claude

Learn the conversation, input, history and organization concepts before your first task. Text-first review edition; verified interface screenshots follow.

◷ 10 minutes✳ First-timerLearn by doing
BY THE END, YOU CAN…

Start a fresh chat, run and revise a small task, save the result and explain what is—and is not—shared between conversations.

Time is a practice estimate. Pause or return whenever you need.
YOUR WORKSPACE, EXPLAINED

Know what each part is for.

A concept map, not a screenshot of your app. Exact labels and locations depend on the interface.

01 · Navigation

Start a new task. Find previous conversations. Open organization features where available.

02 · Conversation

Your messages and the AI’s replies. Follow up here to revise the current result.

03 · Message box

Give the task, context and constraints. Review before sending.

04 · Attachments

Add selected, approved material. An attachment is context—not access to every file.

05 · Model & tools

Optional ways to handle a task. Different modes do not remove the need to check.

06 · History & organization

Find a chat again. Projects, Gems, notebooks and folders are not interchangeable.

07 · Output actions

Copy, revise or save. A share link is different from a private copy.

08 · Account & settings

Confirm the account and inspect preferences. Don’t change access or billing just to follow a lesson.

01 / IMAGINE

A useful little possibility.

A busy AI interface can make a simple task feel technical. You will learn the few controls needed for your first useful result. This is a text-first orientation for review. The visual guide above explains concepts, not exact button positions. Verified screenshots will identify the actual controls for your selected app, operating system and account.

02 / TRY

Let’s make a start.

1. Confirm the product, account and surface you are using. Avoid changing billing or organization settings.

2. Locate the control for a fresh conversation. Its label or icon may vary. Open a new chat; do not delete an existing one.

3. Find the message composer and paste the sample plus prompt. Identify the send control before using it.

4. After the answer, ask: “Make this shorter without changing the facts.” Notice that a follow-up belongs to the same conversation.

5. Find the conversation in history and, if a rename control is available, give it a descriptive title such as “Practice — room update”.

6. Copy the final answer into your own document. Locate—but do not activate—sharing, deletion and connected-app controls. If a control is absent, note that rather than following a different product’s screenshot.

Your sample material

Fictional training material. No real customer information needed.

Fictional practice notes: The room booking is not confirmed. A draft agenda is ready. Rowan needs to choose a preferred date before availability can be checked.

YOUR STARTER PROMPT
Turn these notes into a two-sentence update. Preserve the difference between a draft, a preference and a confirmed booking. Use only the supplied information.

Keep personal and confidential information out of external AI tools. Start with the sample material.

03 / CREATE

Turn a first try into your thing.

Save the reviewed update outside the chat. Then open another fresh conversation and explicitly supply the sample again. Do not rely on unstated memory across chats. Explain to yourself the difference between continuing a conversation and starting a new task. Optional: locate the attachment control and inspect what kinds of input it accepts without granting access to confidential files.

04 / UNDERSTAND

Pause for the “aha.”

Projects can group ongoing work and context; an ordinary chat is a single conversation. Skills are reusable procedures, not folders. Begin in ordinary chat; Projects and Skills are optional extensions after the first exercise. Do not assume moving a chat grants access to local computer folders.

Control literacy: a model or mode selector changes how a task is handled; it does not make the answer verified. An attachment contributes selected context, not permission to read every file. Copying an answer is different from creating a share link. Settings can include personal preferences and data controls; inspect before changing.

CHECK YOUR RESULT

Useful beats convincing.

Check these against your actual output. Your answers stay on this device; this is self-review, not automated grading.

The draft agenda is ready, but the room booking is not confirmed. Rowan needs to choose a preferred date before availability can be checked.

A shorter correct version may differ. It must not say the room is booked. You should also have a saved local copy and be able to reopen the practice conversation without depending on its exact position in the sidebar.

NOW MAKE IT YOURS

A new case. Your own approach.

Apply the review principles to these new facts, not the previous sample’s specific numbers or answers.

Start a new chat with: “Supplier quote received. No purchase approved. Lee must review the quote.” Write your own instruction for a concise update. Find the response again later and verify it never calls the quote a purchase.

05 / SHARE & REMIX

One possibility leads to another.

Continue with B01, “Turn messy notes into a clear brief.” Keep your workspace notes nearby. You do not need to learn every advanced control before doing useful work.
